news servers hammered

Came home today and can't access newsgroups. After 40* minutes
with phone support have established that it is not an
authentication issue, it's strictly an issue with server
transition today.

Platform: Netscape 3.02 on Win95. Hey, don't like it? Buy
me a new machine and OS. :)

Symptoms: I only had one news server in the servers pain in
Netscape, news.airmail.net. Opening the server yields a prompt
for username and password, both of which are happily accepted.
Then the list of subscribed groups comes up. Normally this
list shrinks as groups withoug new messages are hidden since
I have Netscape set to show only active groups. Normally the
number of unread messages is shown to the right in that pane.

Here's where the problems start. The list does seem to shrink
like it's supposed to, but instead of the quantity of unread
messages there are just question marks. When I click on a group
to open it all I get is an error message saying there's no such
group. No message appear.

So I called support where they had me change under options->
servers the name of the server from news.airmail.net to
library3.airnews.net. When I hit save and close that server
name was added to the server list (now there are two, this one
and news.airmail.net) and it's listed as the default news host.
Now I'm prompted for username and password, both of which are
happily accepted. The list of three default gruops pops up and
show unread messages as accepted, so now I know I can get to
a news server. While on hold I manually typed out in notepat
a list of all the newsgruops I was subscribed to on news.airmail.net
and then manually typed all of them into the new server group list.

However, all of the clari groups are gone from the new server.
Also missing are airnews.alt.paranoia.black.helicopters and
airmail.announce. I want the clari groups, they're one of the
main groups that I follow. Airmail.announce is an internal group
for IA, come on!

Support was unable to help further, other than to say that there
were server upgrades done today and she didn't know what else
to say or do, other than to suggest that I email support.

So, I'll email support and post this here.

There's nothing wrong on my end, everything worked fine up until
today, I like this platform becuase it is reliable, bulletproof,
and can't be infected by spyware and worms.

Also, because the groups I did manage to get added under the
library2 server are virgin, I've got hundreds of thousands of
messages dating back months to go through to flag the ones
that I was tracking. Sigh. Looks like I'll be busy for a few
days.

Talked to tech services. No help in them correctine the problem.
Seems like they changed servers and it is creating a big problem.
The new servers messages must not be the same ID number so it is DL
all headers on the servers.

Log in issue problems are explained that you now have to use your full
user ID eg ***@airmail.net.

Bottom Line: Before DL any new headers in other groups mark (somehow)
your most recent header DL date. Then you will have to go back and
delete all headers before that time.

GOOD WORK AIRMAIL.NET.

I just got a message saying that the clari groups won't
be offered anymore after the 21st. Damn! I get the bulk
of my news from clari, now I'm screwed. I don't know of
any other way to get news stories that are grouped by my
interests, plain text, no html bloatware webpages that
take forever to load even on DSL. Does anyone have any
idea where I can news equivalent in quality and style
as clari.net?

I'm already paying top dollar for IA, can't afford to
pay giganews more just for clari. Sigh.

Who told you that?

http://www.airnews.net/ seems to say otherwise:

Great Content - Airnews uses Clarinet News Wire Services
to provide our users with all the latest sports highlights
and scores, headlines, and global events. These stories
are updated continually by the wire-services to provide
up to the minute stats and important information.

No mention there of the 21st.

Is this really true? After the 21st of March the CLARI.* hierarchy is
going away? Why????????????

Like JazzMan, I subscribe to about 6 of those CLARI groups to get some
specific news.

Well, from the looks of it, the "why" appears to be that IA is
getting out of the usenet business

vampire:/home/dzeiger 43% nslookup library.airnews.net
Server: vampire.the-institute.net
Address: 0.0.0.0

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: news-ia.supernews.net
Address: 216.168.3.66
Aliases: library.airnews.net

Or, in other words, library.airnews.net now points to a Supernews
news server.

Since I already *have* Supernews through my ISP, sounds like I may
be able to save a little money now.

Odd that this isn't mentioned anywhere that I can find, given that
IA is publiclly traded. Unless they plan to keep the Airnews
brand as just some sort of Supernews reseller, I guess.
